Bring the Magic Home with Music and Memories

Some memories come with a soundtrack. Others taste like a favorite family recipe. And sometimes, all it takes is a familiar song or something delicious cooking in the kitchen to bring those moments right back.

Disney and Pixar’s Coco brings music, family and memories together in a colorful adventure with plenty of heart. It’s the perfect inspiration for a movie night filled with good food, favorite stories and a little extra time around the table.

So gather your familia, turn up the music and save room for something sweet...we’re heading to Santa Cecilia!

Why We Chose Coco

Coco follows Miguel, a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s ban on music. His journey into the Land of the Dead leads him to discover more about his family and the stories that connect them.

With its celebration of Mexican culture and Día de los Muertos, the movie offers a meaningful reminder of the importance of remembering the people we love.

That gave this Movie Menu inspiration beyond what to serve for dinner. A favorite recipe, a family photograph or a story someone tells every time you get together can all become part of the evening.

And with colorful flowers, guitar accents and a little cinnamon sugar, there’s plenty of room for fun along the way!

What’s on the Menu?

Every family can make this menu their own, but here’s what’s on ours for a Coco-inspired evening.

Miguel’s Potato Tacos

Crispy on the outside, warm and cheesy on the inside...these tacos bring a little Disneyland-inspired flavor to the table.

Corn tortillas are filled with mashed potatoes and shredded cheddar cheese, then cooked in a skillet until golden. Simple ingredients, plenty of crunch and all kinds of possibilities for toppings!

Serve them with salsa, sour cream, guacamole or a sprinkle of fresh cilantro. You can even set out a few small bowls and let everyone finish their own plate.

Just make sure to save room for the rest of the menu. These might be easy to reach for twice!

Marigold Mexican Slaw

A colorful movie night deserves a colorful side dish.

Our cilantro lime coleslaw combines green and red cabbage with red bell pepper and a tangy dressing made with cilantro, lime, red wine vinegar and cumin.

It’s fresh, crunchy and a bright partner for those warm potato tacos. The name is a nod to the movie’s beautiful marigolds, while the vegetables bring their own splash of color to the plate.

You can prepare the dressing a day ahead, too. One less thing to do before the opening credits!

Dante’s Churro Cookies

We couldn’t leave dessert out of this adventure.

These churro-inspired cookies bring the cinnamon-sugar goodness of a park favorite to your kitchen, with crisp edges, soft centers and a sweet coating.

The dough is piped into strips for that familiar churro look, baked and then dipped in glaze and rolled in cinnamon sugar.

A little messy? Maybe.

Worth a few cinnamon-covered fingers? Absolutely.

Remember Me Agua Fresca

Sweet watermelon and fresh lime make this a refreshing way to round out the menu.

The watermelon is blended with lime juice, sugar and water, then strained and served over ice. Add a watermelon wedge or lime slice for a simple finishing touch.

For anyone who enjoys a little tangy spice, a Tajín rim adds something extra. You can also leave the rims plain and let that sweet watermelon flavor shine.

Either way, it’s a colorful sip for the whole family.

Setting the Scene

For this Movie Menu, take inspiration from Coco’s vibrant colors, glowing marigolds and love of music. You don’t need an elaborate setup to make the evening feel special. Start with what you already have, then add a few details that connect your table to the story.

Try a few of these ideas:

  • Bright napkins or a colorful table runner

  • Orange and yellow flowers, including fresh or paper marigolds

  • Papel picado banners

  • Small guitar decorations or a guitar you already own

  • Battery-operated candles for a warm glow

  • Family photographs to spark stories around the table

  • Your printable Coco Movie Menu at each place setting

Play the Coco soundtrack while dinner comes together and invite everyone to choose a favorite song. Someone may start singing before the tacos are ready. Consider it the opening act!

Behind the Scenes

A few small steps can make this menu easier to bring together. Start with the churro cookies so they have time to cool before dipping, then allow the cinnamon-sugar coating to set. That leaves you free to work on the rest of dinner without keeping one eye on dessert.

For the tacos, warm the tortillas before filling them so they’re easier to fold without cracking. Thick mashed potatoes help keep the filling tucked inside, too.

And if piping the cookie dough takes a little practice? There’s no award for making every cookie exactly the same length.

Those little kitchen moments are part of the evening. Let someone choose the music, give someone else the job of setting out napkins and leave a little time to enjoy making it all together. The memories can start before anyone presses play.

Keep the Magic Going

Coco gives everyone around the table something to talk about.

Before the movie, choose a few questions from your conversation card:

  • What is a family tradition you hope your family never stops doing?

  • What food instantly reminds you of someone you love?

  • What is one of your favorite memories with your family?

  • What song reminds you of a person, place or memory?

  • Who in our family tells the best stories? What story do they tell over and over?

  • If you could make one new family tradition starting tonight, what would it be?

Give everyone a chance to share, and leave room for the conversation to wander. A question about someone’s favorite food might turn into a story the younger people at the table have never heard.

Save the trivia card for after the movie and see who remembers the most about Miguel’s adventure. No peeking during the credits!

Make It Your Own

Your movie night can be as simple or as creative as you want it to be.

Here are a few more ways to make the evening your own:

  • Invite everyone to wear a favorite bright color.

  • Make paper flowers together before dinner.

  • Let each person choose a song for your dinner playlist.

  • Look through a family photo album and share the stories behind the pictures.

  • Add a favorite family recipe to the menu.

  • Have a sing-along with toy instruments or homemade guitars.

  • Call a relative and ask about a favorite childhood memory.

  • Finish the evening by sharing one tradition you’d like to pass along.

You don’t have to fit every idea into one night. A good meal, a favorite movie and a little time together are plenty.
